Language Pathways

Students at ISNS come from many different countries and speak many different languages. Most have had some English language instruction in their previous schools. All students with less than 3 years of full English language instruction will be required to have an English language assessment previous to their enrollment interview. The results of these assessments provide necessary information for grade placement as well as a means of determining the level of support necessary.


Students in Grades 2-11  are assessed using the Cambridge ESOL examination system to determine proficiency level of all non-native English students. PM Benchmark Reading assesment and Canadian New Brunswick Writing Standards will be used as supplementary assessments to provide a thorough understanding of a student’s English level. 

Primary School

During the first few weeks of school, our EAL team performs assessments of students, in order to make a plan to best support each students. We see each student as having unique needs, and it is important that we take this time to get to know our students, so we can best serve them.

In Grades 1 to 5, our EAL programme includes a push in and pull out model.  This means that the EAL teacher will work in the homeroom class, alongside the homeroom teacher to develop differentiated teaching and learning engagements that allow EAL learners to access the curriculum (push in). The EAL teacher will pull students out of the classroom to provide one- on- one or small group support (pull out). This is based on the needs of our students, and can vary from day to day. EAL pull out teaching includes basic conversational sentences, high frequency words, phonetic skills, guided reading, grammar and writing through reading. During the pull out sessions, EAL teachers also provide intentional and explicit teaching and learning engagements that focus on contextualized language use through inquiry.

Middle School

Intensive English Support Programme

This program is designed specifically for second-language English learners whose English is below native proficiency and at Level A1-A2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) and Cambridge. The main objectives are to develop English, to promote life skills and to enable students to enter the International Baccalaureate(IB) programmes at ISNS or any other international educational institution around the world. Teaching and learning is real-world focused in small classes with age-specific instruction and individualized attention. This program gives the students the opportunity to boost their listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, phonics and use of the English language in context.

MYP English Language Acquisition Programme

In Years 6 to 10, students follow the MYP English Language Acquisition Programme, either at Phase 3 or Phase 4. EAL students receive direct instruction in MYP English Language Acquisition in place of MYP English Language and Literature. In addition, they are supported in the main subject classes by Language teachers if it’s necessary.  The principal goal of the programme is to help English Language Acquisition students acquire sufficient competence in English to succeed at levels comparable to their non-EAL peers.  In Years 11 to 12, there is currently no provision for EAL students. However, students who finish the MYP still need extra English support will have the opportunity to select IB Diploma English B as their course of study.
