Phoenix Athletics Highlights

Dec. 14, 2017

HIGH SCHOOL

ISNS High School Basketball teams competed in the PRC Red Division basketball exchange this weekend in preparation for the competition which falls the first weekend after the Christmas break. The exchange event (hosted at NCPA-Nansha) gave both teams an excellent opportunity to face their divisional rivals and to gather some useful information on their opponent’s strengths and weaknesses. It also allowed both ISNS teams to give their squads plenty of practice and to utilize the systems they have been putting into practice during their practice sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Both ISNS teams faced QSID, NCPA and ULC at the event and the boys managed 1 tie and 2 losses while the girls narrowly lost all 3 games, each by only 1 or 2 points. Although the results didn’t go perfectly, both teams should still take a lot of heart from their performances and have confidence heading into the tournament next month. They matched their opponents for most of their games and with a little more fortune could easily have walked away with winning records on the day.

Both teams also returned to SISAC action on Monday night against Shekou International School (SIS) at Shekou Sports Centre. The boys returned to form and overcame their opponent’s by 25-20, which leaves them with a perfect 3-0 record in the Shenzhen League. The girls found the game much tougher and were missing a few key players as they went down 35-14 to SIS leaving them currently in 2nd place with a 2-1 record.

ISNS Team Phoenix next face SWIS away on Monday 18th December. Parents, students and teachers are always encouraged to come and cheer on the teams. Games will begin 4:15pm and finish around 5:30pm.

Gold Division 'Gold' for ISNS

ISNS Team Phoenix celebrated their most successful ACAMIS tournament ever last weekend with a historic performance at the Gold Division Volleyball Championships in Hong Kong.

After 3 hard fought days of action-packed volleyball, both of our teams walked away as deserving trophy winners with our girls finishing in 3rd Place and our boys crowned as the 2017-18 Gold Division ACAMIS Champions.

For the first time in our five year ACAMIS history, both ISNS teams made it through to the final day volleyball play-offs. Our girls progressed with a 3-2 record which seeded them in 3rd place and our boys went undefeated (5-0) giving them the #1 seed.

In a courageous semi-final against a very strong HKA team, our girls eventually fell by 2 sets to 0, but certainly showed a lot of skill and heart and pushed their opponents all the way. They took their fighting mentality into the 3rd place game where they outplayed their opponents (HIS) and won 2-0 to claim the third place trophy. Joyous celebrations ensued and the pride, relief and joy was clear for all to see as the girls celebrated their first ACAMIS silverware.

Not to be outdone by the girls, the ISNS Boys set about their play-off journey with a semi-final against Hangzhou International School. Team Phoenix quickly found its stride and showed no signs of nerves as they overpowered their opponents, winning by 2 sets to 0. This set ISNS up for an enthralling final against TIS Macau, one of only two teams to have beaten Team Phoenix this year. With vengeance in mind, ISNS took the game to their opponents and played like champions from the first whistle to the last. Each team member played their part flawlessly and the team executed their game plan to perfection. After winning the first set, ISNS found themselves at championship point in the second. Long Fu stepped up confidently and served an Ace over the net to spark jubilant scenes as ISNS celebrated their long awaited first ACAMIS Gold.

In the ensuing presentation awards, the host A.D highlighted that the boys team were victorious due to their teamwork, professionalism and modesty throughout the tournament. We couldn’t agree more, or be any prouder of all 20 of our student-athletes and what they achieved this weekend.

Success like this didn't come by chance. These were undoubtedly the most committed and dedicated sports teams in ISNS history. All practices throughout the season were attended by all players and in every game it was clear to see the development, growth and maturity of both teams.

This was indisputably a historic weekend for ISNS sport and a great advertisement of how much can be achieved with dedication, team work and passion.

Congratulations to both our teams and to their amazing coaches – Mr. Rogers, Mr. Ireland, Mrs. Rogers, Ms. Nicklas and Ms. Rutherford. You made ISNS proud!

Coming up in the next season of #ISNSports will be Middle School Badminton (continued) and Volleyball which begins in early December. High School Athletics now turns its attention to Basketball season which begins Monday, November 6.

To join these teams, parents now need to enroll their child via Schoolsbuddy Software App. Parent training for this will take place on Wednesday, November 1 (6:30-7:30 p.m.) and Thursday, November 2 (7:00-8:00 p.m.)

Sign-up information will be emailed home this week via ISNS News.

Athletics Highlights - Tuesday, October 24

Season 1 drew to a close this week for our Middle School Soccer stars, with the ISNS Team Phoenix in game-mode at the season culminating PRC Soccer Championships.

ISNS had the pleasure of hosting the Girls Blue Division competition which included TLC Dongguan, The British School of Guangzhou and Utahloy International School of Guangzhou. Our girls competed admirably and gave a great account of themselves in every game. They finished the day with a respectable 1-2 record, which earned them a 3rd place finish and a well deserved trophy to reward their season’s efforts. Well done girls, a great achievement!

ISNS Middle School Boys travelled to the American International School of Guangzhou (AISG) to compete in the boys’ competition, where they faced both team and personal challenges against five strong international school teams (AISG, BSG, ISD, TLC and UISG). Our boys rose to the occasion and were unbeaten in their pool, earning them a place in the Final. The Final proved to be a highly entertaining, back and forth game which could have gone either way, but ultimately ISNS were unfortunately on the end of a 3-4 loss, which gave them a 2nd place finish in the competition. In ISNS’ first year in the Blue Division (one of the top 2 in the PRC), this was a fantastic achievement and the team should have every confidence of going one step better in 2018. Well done, boys!

A special thanks goes out to our girl’s coaches: Mr. DeSousa and Ms. Cottingham and our boy’s coaches: Mr. Stafford and Mr. MacLeod. Your leadership, dedication and generosity is greatly appreciated by the teams and was no doubt rewarded by the two trophies won last weekend! #PhoenixPride

Season 2 is about to kick-start with Middle School sport turning its attention to Badminton and Volleyball. Badminton is now up and running and our teams take to the court for serious action this Saturday at the PRC Exchange hosted by QSI Shekou. Good luck players!

At High School level, ISNS Team Phoenix has had a fairly quiet week as they eagerly anticipate this weekends ACAMIS Volleyball Championships at Hong Kong Academy. Both teams competed in their final preparatory game this Monday against TLC Dongguan where our Boys won 2-1 and our Girls lost 1-2. This gave our teams both a very healthy winning season record heading into ACAMIS; our Boys boasting a 13-3 record and our girls 9-7. Best of luck to our players and coaches in Hong Kong this weekend, let’s keep bringing home those trophies!!

Athletics Highlights - Tuesday, October 17

ISNS Team Phoenix have had a jam-packed schedule since the October break! With both High School Volleyball and Middle School Soccer season’s drawing to a close there has been a lot to play for.

Our U19 Boys Volleyball team qualified for SISAC Play-Offs as the number 1 seed, having won all five of their league games. At the Play-Offs, ISNS's training paid off against SWIS in the semi-final coming up for the win against their opposition 2-0. The final presented a much tougher task against a strong QSI team who ISNS has never beaten in the past. ISNS competed admirably and put in a fantastic display, but unfortunately lost the final 0-2 (20-25, 19-25) to end the season as the SISAC runners-up. A great achievement and effort from our players and coaches! A special mention to 3 players who were voted as part of the 2017-18 SISAC All-Star Team: Hao Chen, Long Fu and Daniel Gavra.

Recently, the boys also enjoyed success at the PRC Red Division Volleyball Championships at the International School of Macau. The boys lost a heart-breaking semi-final to the eventual winners TIS by 2 sets to 1, but re-grouped well to beat NCPA 2-0 in the third place game to ensure they returned to Shenzhen with some much deserved silverware!

Our U19 Girls Volleyball team similarly qualified for SISAC Play-Offs as the number 1 seed after an impressive 4-1 season. The girls overcame BASIS in the semi-finals but unfortunately suffered the same fate as our boys’ team, losing 0-2 (17-25, 17-25) to a very strong QSI team. ISNS hung with their opponents every step of the way and should take great heart and pride from a competitive performance against a team that have beaten us by 20+ points many times in the past. Great effort girls and a really impressive SISAC season – our best so far! Another special mention to three of our players who were voted as part of the 2017-18 SISAC All-Star Team: Sammy Ko, Tiffany Faass and Michelle Lu.

ISNS had the pleasure of hosting the PRC Girls Red Division Volleyball Championships on Saturday, October 14. It was a fantastic occasion as we welcomed 6 International Schools from Shenzhen, Macau, Nanshan and Dongguan. ISNS girls finished 2nd  in their pool but sadly lost their first play-off game to NCPA, finishing up in 5th place in the competition. It was great experience for our girls and a good lesson in the rigours of tournament play ahead of our team’s biggest competition of the year – ACAMIS Volleyball at Hong Kong Academy on October 26 – 29.

We wish both of our teams the best of luck at the tournament! Let’s go Phoenix, lets go……#PhoenixPride

In Middle School Soccer, both our boys and girls’ teams agonizingly missed qualifying for SISAC play-offs, both teams finishing in 5th place when needing to break the top 4. Both teams travelled to SWIS for their final game of the season, our girls needing only a tie and our boys needing a win to qualify. Sadly, neither was quite able to pull off the result that they needed and our girls went down 0-4 and our boys 0-2. This was a tough end to the SISAC season for both our teams, but with many grade 6 and 7 students occupying key roles in the teams, there’s plenty of reason for optimism for the future of ISNS Middle School Soccer!!

Both teams now look forward with anticipation to the end of season PRC Soccer Championships on Saturday, October 20. ISNS will host the girls’ competition, while our boys team will travel to the American International School of Guangzhou (AISG). Good luck to both our teams, we hope they can win some very well deserved trophies!

Athletics Highlights - Tuesday, September 26

Season One of Phoenix Athletics 2017-18 is well under way and our student-athletes have been battling hard in both High School Volleyball and Middle School Soccer.

Our Under 19 Boys Volleyball Team continues to shine and are yet to be beaten this year, boasting a perfect 9-0 record. They currently sit in first place in the SISAC league table and won all five games of their PRC exchange at the QSI International School of Dongguan last weekend.

The Under 19 Girls also performed admirably in the event and walked away with a 3-2 record after well-deserved victories over TIS (Macao), ULC and QSID International Schools. The girls team also currently sits in first  place in the SISAC league table and is guaranteed a play-off spot at the SISAC finals hosted by ISNS on Monday, October 16. We encourage as many students and parents as possible to come down and cheer on Mrs. Rogers team!

As we proceed into October we wish both of our teams the best of luck in their upcoming SISAC, PRC and ACAMIS Championships.

In Middle School soccer, our girls team recently competed in the PRC Blue Division Exchange at the British School of Guangzhou. They battled the heat and their three opponents to walk away with a 1-1-1 record. The team are also holding their own in the SISAC league and currently sit in fourth place after a 3-2 win over BASIS and an 0-3 loss to GOS.

Our Middle School boys team continue to work hard and are making swift progress and improvements. The young side which consists mostly of Grade 6 and 7 students are still searching for their first victory of the season but have recently turned in admirable displays against both BASIS and GOS. The team currently sits in sixth place in the SISAC League Table.

We wish both our soccer teams much success this week as they compete away at QSI (Shekou) and SIS at Shenzhen Bay!

Athletics Highlights - Tuesday, September 19

Phoenix Pride

It has been a jam-packed week for the ISNS Phoenix. Last Wednesday, our Middle School Boys and Girls teams took to the field for their first soccer match of the season.

Both teams faced BASIS and their football form was flawless.

Our Middle School boys fought exceptionally hard, focused on defense, remaining competitive in the offense but unfortunately missed out in a 1-2 loss.

Our Middle School girls powered through, trailing in the first half for an "edge-of-your-seat" come back to win in the second half 3-2.

Both teams came out strong, their phoenix pride even stronger. It was a great start to the season and we look forward to seeing our young Phoenix rise to every challenge at every game!

Over the weekend, our Middle School boys traveled to Guangzhou to play in a friendly tournament against four schools in the region; American International School of Guangzhou, International School of Dongguan (ISD), British School of Guangzhou and The Learning College Dongguan (TLC). It was great preparation for our major tournaments coming up in three weeks!
