Head of School Notice: Important updates and reminders
March 11, 2020
An ancient proverb says, "A river cuts through rock not because of its power, but because of its persistence." Persistence is a key aspect of the IB approaches to learning. It is during a time like this that we see the wisdom of the IB in pro-actively teaching such essential traits to our learners. I understand it is taking a great deal of persistence on your part at home with your children during this challenging time, but stay strong and know that we will get through it together.
At this time, I would like to provide an update on several important items:
If you are not currently in Shenzhen, we have been asked by the government to inform our community to remain where you are and not return until further notice. The government is working persistently to contain the virus and will be placing those returning now in strict quarantine. We will do our best to notify you three weeks prior to the opening of the campus so that you can plan your return accordingly.
Break from Online Learning
Please remember that our scheduled break from online learning will take place from March 12 to March 20. There will be no instruction during this time. It would, however, be a good time for your child to catch up on their work if they have gotten behind in any subject. Also, please take the opportunity to have your child engage in activities that don't require a screen.
Online Learning to Resume March 23
When online learning resumes on March 23, we plan to make several refinements designed to help you better support your child at home. We have listened to your feedback and plan to make changes accordingly. One such improvement will be to provide a more structured daily schedule for PYP and MYP students to follow. Additionally, it is our goal to increase the amount of direct interaction between teachers and students to continue to keep students on track. If you have further feedback for your child's teachers regarding online learning, please continue to communicate with them directly. If you need help to overcome the language barrier, please do not hesitate to ask for assistance with translation.
Thank you for your patience as you have waited for us to issue student progress reports from first semester and second quarter. We have been able to get these completed now and they will be available for your viewing or download from Managebac on Friday, March 13th.
ISNS Students are On-Track
Our teachers and staff are working full-time during the closure of our campus to do the utmost they can to keep learning happening. Our goal is to keep students on track with the planned curriculum. We are happy to report that our students are on-track, and we are still planning to hold the IB exams for DP students on our campus in May. We will communicate with you immediately if alternative arrangements must be made for exams or if any concerns about your child's progress should arise.
Our operations team is working diligently to ensure that our campus will be safe and equipped once we can re-open. Our maintenance team is working to secure UV lighting. They will be installed in all key areas, including classrooms, and operated at night to disinfect these areas and help to maximize the safety of our students. Our administrative team is working with Sodexo to make arrangements for extra cleaning and food safety measures to be implemented upon our return. Sodexo staff are currently working on campus, maintaining the cleanliness of the school.
Please keep in mind that we are a private international school and, as such, do not receive any financial assistance from the government during this crisis. ISNS is committed to providing the best education and environment for your child both on and off-campus. Thus, the school continues to have expenses that are similar to what it would during regular operation.
It is a pleasure to have such wonderful parents and students in our school community. Thank you very much for being so understanding and supportive as we continue to wait for the end of this test of our perseverance.
