- How was ISNS established?
ISNS was founded in 2002 through the foresight and partnership among the Government of Canada, the Province of New Brunswick, and Dr. Francis Pang, with the vision to educate and embrace the whole child. The goal is to foster a diverse student body through an exceptional education, instilling in young people a love and joy of learning, an ability to think independently, and the confidence to take risks in pursuing their dreams and goals.
- What grade levels are offered at ISNS?
ISNS is a through-train school and currently has classes from Kindergarten (from 3 years old) to Grade 12.
- How many students attend ISNS?
Currently ISNS has over 700 students.
- Where are your students from?
Our students are all expats as ISNS is only allowed to accept students that hold a foreign passport. Currently over 30 nationalities are represented at ISNS including; Canada, USA, Taiwan, Korea, Australia,New Zealand, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Japan, France, UK, Cyprus, Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Russia, Spain, Ukraine, India, Indonesia, Iran, Macau, Philippines, Singapore, Egypt, Gambia, Guinea, South Africa and Vanuatu.
- Does the campus belong to ISNS?
Yes, the campus and all its facilities belong to ISNS.
- What does a student’s day look like?
K3 to G12 Students: 8:10 AM to 3:30 PM On Wednesday the school is dismissed at 2:20 PM
- What accreditations does ISNS have?
ISNS is accredited by the New Brunswick Department of Education in Canada, offering to its students an internationally recognized Canadian curriculum. As well as being affiliated with the Canadian Province of New Brunswick’s Department of Education, ISNS is also affiliated with UNESCO, and with ACAMIS (Association of China and Mongolia International Schools), EARCOS (The East Asia Council of Schools) and CIS (Council of International Schools). ISNS is also an examining site for SAT. The International School of Nanshan Shenzhen is also an IB World School offering Primary Years Programme (PYP) / Middle Years Programme (MYP) / Diploma Programme (DP).
- What curriculum does ISNS follow?
ISNS offers to its students an internationally recognized Canadian curriculum within the framework of IB (International Baccalaureate).
- What is the language of instruction at ISNS?
English is the primary language of instruction at ISNS.
- What language courses are offered?
Mandarin is a mandatory language class for G1 to G5 students, G6-G10 students can have a choice of French and Mandarin
- Is English as an additional language (EAL a.k.a. ESL or ELL) support available?
Yes, ISNS offers EAL programme for G1-10 students who require some English as Another Language support. ISNS also offers Intensive English Support Programme for G6-G8 students.
- Is there a guidance counsellor and nurse on campus?
Yes, currently ISNS has three counsellors. One for Grades K3-G2, One for G3-G5 and One for G6-G12. ISNS also has a University Counsellor. There are also two on-campus nurses.
- Does ISNS offer after school activities?
ISNS offers a wide range of after school activities like choir, music bands, Chinese ensemble, art enrichment club, yearbook club, and a variety of sport teams: soccer, volleyball, rugby, basketball, cross-country etc.
- Does ISNS have field trips?
Yes, ISNS has mandatory annual field trips that are an integral part of our curriculum.
- How does ISNS use technology to aid learning?
At ISNS it is believed that education must change with the times, for this reason every classroom is equipped with a SmartBoard. PYP students have access to class sets of Macbooks and iPads to assist with interactive learning. Middle Years and DP students are required to bring personal laptops on a daily basis.
- What kind of facilities are available to students of ISNS
The ISNS campus, along with the main school building, houses a separate kindergarten and residential building. The ISNS Kindergarten is open to students from 3 to 6 years of age, while students in grades 1 to 12 will be in the main school building. There is a 300-seat auditorium, fully equipped science labs, computer labs, and separate libraries for the kindergarten and main school buildings. The ISNS Athletics Program includes a 200-meter outdoor track and field, fitness center, and a full-size gymnasium large enough to set up 2 volleyball courts at the same time. Arts and music students stretch their creative muscles in the media center, dance studio, the ensemble and practice rooms for choral and instrumental performances, the 3 visual arts rooms, the photography darkroom, plus gallery space where they can exhibit their work.
- Is parent involvement encouraged at ISNS? Is there a PTA?
Yes, ISNS understands the need for parent involvement in the school and encourages all parents to play an active role in their children's education. We have parents that are class or grade representatives and throughout the year we will have many special events organized by the Parent Association which is an amazing opportunity for parents to volunteer, in addition to strengthening community bonds.

- Does ISNS have a school uniform? How much do uniforms cost?
ISNS are required to wear the school uniform at all times: K3 to Grade 2 students will need to wear the new ISNS PE uniform composed of a shirt and shorts. One PE set is 165RMB Grades 3 to 12 students will be required to wear the formal uniform composing of the school white shirt, tie and short/skorts, and also should wear black shoes and white socks. One set is 230RMB ISNS will also sells, cardigans, hoodies, tracksuit coat and pants, etc. Student must wear ISNS apparel at all times. For Grades 3 to 12, it is compulsory to buy the new PE Uniform (shirt and shorts). One set is 165RMB
- How safe is the ISNS campus?
ISNS makes every possible effort to ensure the safety of it students. Only authorized personal are allowed on campus to this end the school has a surrounding wall and the campus is patrolled 24 hours a day by live in security guards. Key staff are trained in first aid should the need arise as well as having a licensed school nurse. The school also has a comprehensive plan to cover any possible dangers a student may encounter.
- Does ISNS provide Bus Service?
Yes, ISNS provides an optional bus service to major locations in Nanshan, Futian, Bao'an and Luohu. For more information please contact our bus coordinator.
