The Digital and Media Literacy (DML) Program at ISNS represents a unique integration of Educational Technology and Library/Media Centre services into a unified learning program. By bringing together the strengths of both disciplines, ISNS has created a comprehensive approach that equips students with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to learn, create, communicate, and think critically in a rapidly evolving world. Through inquiry-based learning experiences, students engage with information, technology, media, and digital tools in meaningful and authentic ways. The program fosters innovation, creativity, collaboration, and responsible digital citizenship while supporting learning across all subject areas. Grounded in international standards and best practices, the DML Program prepares students to navigate complex information landscapes and become confident, ethical, and future-ready learners.
At the heart of the Digital and Media Literacy Program are five interconnected literacies that help students become thoughtful consumers, creators, and communicators of information:
Information Literacy – Developing the ability to locate, evaluate, interpret, and ethically use information from a variety of sources.
Data Literacy – Understanding how to collect, analyze, interpret, and communicate data to make informed decisions and solve problems.
Media Literacy – Critically examining media messages, recognizing bias and perspective, and creating media responsibly and effectively.
Technology Literacy – Building the knowledge and skills needed to use digital tools, systems, and technologies purposefully, safely, and efficiently.
Digital Literacy – Developing the ability to communicate, collaborate, create, and participate responsibly in digital environments while demonstrating strong digital citizenship.
Together, these five literacies equip students with the essential competencies needed for learning, innovation, and responsible participation in a rapidly evolving digital world.
