Emergency Procedures 应急措施

Emergency Preparedness

Procedures are in place for foreseeable emergencies that may affect the safety of students at ISNS.  The school will be closed should there be an emergency that makes it unsafe to travel to school.  School buildings will be evacuated should there be a fire or other emergency which causes it to be unsafe to remain inside.  Additional procedures have been established to “lock-down” the campus in the event of an intruder or other outside dangers.

Every student should be aware of these procedures and carefully follow their teacher’s instructions should an emergency occur

At ISNS, the safety and wellbeing of our students, staff, and families are our highest priority. ISNS strictly follows the "Guidelines for School Defense Measures During Typhoon and Rainstorm High-Level Warnings (Time-Segmented) for Shenzhen" (2025 Revised Edition), jointly issued by the Education Bureau of Shenzhen Municipality, Shenzhen Emergency Management Bureau, and Meteorological Bureau of Shenzhen Municipality. During Shenzhen’s rainy and typhoon seasons, clear procedures are in place to guide school operations and communications.

School Closure & Notifications

  • ISNS will close under the following conditions:

  • Yellow Typhoon Warning Signal

    Emergency Procedures 应急措施

  • Red Rainstorm Warning Signal

    Emergency Procedures 应急措施

  • Any official announcement from SZTV or the Education Bureau of Shenzhen Municipality that schools should close.

  • Parents will be notified by email (ManageBac) and WeChat:

  • Normally before 10:30 PM the evening prior, or by 6:30 AM on the day of closure.

  • For sudden storm warnings, messages will be sent immediately.

  • Please note that phone calls will not be made.

Where to Check Weather Updates

For official city-wide weather conditions, parents may:

Official ISNS Notification Channels

Please ensure you are connected to the following official ISNS accounts for school notifications:

  • ManageBac: Please make sure you are registered and have an active account to receive ISNS updates.

  • ISNSAlert 提醒通知-WeChat Account : For important announcements.

On-Campus Safety Procedures

  • If students arrive on campus during a Storm Day, they will remain safely in classrooms with teachers until transportation home is arranged.

  • During thunderstorms, ISNS follows the rule: “When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!”

  • Students will be sent indoors, and outdoor activities will be canceled or postponed.

  • After the last sound of thunder or lightning, students will remain indoors for 30 minutes before resuming outdoor activities.

Parent Responsibilities

  • Ensure that your email, mobile phone, and WeChat contact information with ISNS is up-to-date. If you are not receiving notifications, please contact the Admissions Office.

  • If you do not have internet access, please follow SZTV warnings or contact another parent who does.

  • Never send your child to the bus stop alone in bad weather—bus routes may be delayed or re-routed.

Air Quality

Any time that the air quality becomes unhealthy we will take action to protect students.  If the air quality index reaches 150ppm we will keep students indoors and inactive.  If the air quality index reaches 200ppm for an extended period of time (more than 4 hours) we will close school so that students can remain indoors at home and not travel out.  The determination to close school will be made before 6:30am.  Once students are at school for the day they will not be sent home early due to poor air quality.  We use the AQI reading from this website at the OCT station: http://aqicn.org/city/shenzhen/ to make the determination.

Extreme Heat

Parents should ensure that their child is dressed appropriately for the weather each day.  ISNS offers a variety of uniform options so that students can select what is best for the predicted temperature range.

On sunny days, students are encouraged to wear a hat and to apply sunscreen in order to protect themselves.  UV exposure on a repeated basis is a leading cause of cancer and is something that can easily be prevented.  Parents of young children are encouraged to apply long-lasting sunscreen to their child in the morning.  Please note that teachers will not apply sunscreen to children at school for child protection reasons.  Older students may bring sunscreen to school and apply it themselves.

Student should always bring a water bottle to school and drink plenty of water throughout the day.

When the temperature becomes extremely high so that it may be unsafe for students to be playing out in the sun, ISNS will follow these guidelines:

Emergency Procedures 应急措施

Heat exhaustion and heat stroke can occur if students are engaged in active play and not monitoring how they are feeling.  Heat-related illness can easily be prevented by drinking lots of water, staying in the shade, taking frequent breaks from active play and going indoors to an air-conditioned area if the heat becomes too extreme.  Parents and teachers must teach and continually remind students regarding prevention of heat-related illness.

Communicable Diseases

In the event of an outbreak of a disease that is potentially harmful, ISNS will take the following steps (dependent upon the disease and situation):

If a single case of disease is discovered, the child will be asked to stay at home until cleared by a doctor.  Parents of students in the child's immediate class will be notified.  Students who were in close contact with the child will be monitored for symptoms.  Measures will be taken to sanitize the classroom and school facilities.

If more than one case of a disease is discovered, all children with the disease will be asked to stay at home until cleared by a doctor.  The entire school community will be notified.  All students will be monitored for symptoms.  Measures will be taken to sanitize all classrooms and school facilities.

If the disease is life-threatening or poses an extreme danger, school may be closed for a period of days as decided by the Head of School in consultation with medical professionals.

Note:  Each academic year has 180 planned school days for students.  Days off are aligned with major holidays or are planned throughout the year to provide necessary breaks for students and staff.  If school should close due to emergency, teachers will provide lesson material electronically via SeeSaw, Microsoft Teams and Moodle or e-mail.  School days will not be made up if school is closed for less than five days per year due to emergency.  If school must be closed for more than five days in any given academic year, then additional school days will be added to the calendar.
