Responsibilities for Student-to-Student Interactions

  1. Appropriateness of Physical Contact:

    • Students are expected to always maintain appropriate physical contact.

    • Ordinary contact during play or athletics is acceptable.

    • Public displays of affection beyond a friendly hug are discouraged and should remain age appropriate.

  2. Prevention of Violence:

    • Hitting, kicking, fighting, and other violent physical contact must be avoided.

    • Any violent behavior should be stopped immediately by teachers or staff who witness it.

    • Such incidents must be reported to the principal for follow-up, and a written record must be maintained.

  3. Supervision and Education:

    • Teachers are responsible for educating and monitoring students to ensure physical interactions are not abusive, violent, or sexual in nature.

    • Students should be taught the importance of respecting personal boundaries and conducting themselves professionally.

  4. Respecting Personal Boundaries:

    • Students are encouraged to conduct themselves in a professional manner, preparing for future workplace environments.

    • Displays of intimate affection are not appropriate in a professional or educational setting.

  5. Reporting Concerns:

    • Students should be encouraged to report any concerning behavior by their peers to a trusted adult or school counselor.

    • Recognizing, reporting, and refusing unsafe behavior is part of the school’s age-appropriate curriculum, empowering students to protect themselves and others.

Response to Student Misconduct

  • Intervention by Staff:

    • Teachers or staff are required to intervene in cases of inappropriate physical contact between students, using non-physical means where possible.

    • Physical restraint is only allowed when necessary to prevent serious harm.

  • Follow-Up Actions:

    • Violent or inappropriate behavior is referred to the principal for further action. ISNS has a comprehensive behaviour management and follow-up program that is based on the context of the students’ behaviour.

    • Students involved in such behavior may receive counseling or support to address underlying issues.

The ISNS policy fosters a culture of respect, safety, and caring, ensuring that all students interact responsibly and respectfully with their peers.
